Citizenship & PSHCE
Citizenship and Personal Social Health and Economic Education is taught as two discrete subjects through the school. In Years 7, 8 & 9 students are taught once-a-week and the learning is devised [divided?] between the two subjects.
Our aim is to develop all students into informed citizens who take an active role in their community and who can make healthy life-choices. We focus on political literacy, as well as citizens’ rights and responsibilities, and what they mean in the 21st century.
There are three common assessments in Years 7, 8 & 9, with an end-of-year exam which tests the skills developed by the course, not taught content. The assessments focus on political literacy and healthy lifestyles. Years 10 and 11 also undertake Citizenship for one hour-a -week, unless they are following the Full Course. The Short Course is awarded with half-a-GCSE.
From September 2009, the full GCSE comprises four mandatory units, two of which are shared with the Short Course. Two units are assessed via controlled assessments, while the other two are assessed externally: both are 60% internally assessed.
