Design & Technology
D&T is an exciting, dynamic and broad subject that allows students to practically apply learning from many other curriculum areas, such as Maths, Science, ICT, Art, Geography, Business Studies and many more.
Design & Technology is taught to all boys in Years 7, 8 and 9 for three hours, every two weeks, on a carousel system which comprises the different specialist subject areas of Graphic Products, Resistant Materials, Product Design, Systems and Control and Food Technology. In all units, students are encouraged to be creative and innovative, to solve technical problems, consider the impact of D&T on society and the environment, and critically reflect on their work.
All D&T projects have some elements of theoretical and written work, as well as practical contexts so that students can learn kinaesthetically whilst they make quality products that they can feel proud to take home.
In Year 9 students can select one of a range of Design and Technology courses to pursue in Year 10 and 11. These are BTEC Engineering, NVQ Construction, GCSE Graphic Products, and GCSE Food Technology, with GCSE Product Design starting in 2010-11.
In the Sixth Form, students are offered A Level courses in Graphic Products and BTEC Construction. The D&T department is very well resourced, with dedicated and highly-skilled staff; it offers many opportunities for boys of all interests and abilities to enjoy and achieve, as well as empowering them to responsibly use their skills and understanding in real-life situations.
