History
History is a very popular subject within the school with a high uptake at GCSE, AS and A level. Boys from Years 7 to 13 enjoy their history lessons and find the topics covered very interesting.
In Key Stage 3 pupils study Britain from 1066 until the mid-twentieth century. The topics covered include Life in Medieval Times, the Tudors and Stuarts, the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions, Black People of the Americas and the First and Second World Wars. All lessons are designed to capture the boys’ interest, to make them think carefully about the period and to form their own opinions about certain events and people in the past.
There are also a number of opportunities for pupils to attend history trips. These include day trips to Mountfitchet castle for Year 7 and the London Dungeons in Year 8. We also offer a 4-day residential trip to the First World War battlefields of Belgium and France for Year 9 and a 5-day residential trip to Berlin for Year 10 and sixth form students which relates to many of the topics studied at both GCSE and A level.
At GCSE the topics studied include Britain 1903-28, Germany 1918-1939 , International Relations 1900-91 and the Vietnam War. Students taking AS level history study Votes for Women and the Unification of Italy and Germany; while at A2 the topics studied are Germany from Kaiser to Fuhrer and the Making of Modern Russia 1856-1964. GCSE and A level results have been consistently good for many years, with 100% pass rates in both.
