Sutton Borough Cross Country Championships: Strong Team Performance Despite Drizzly Condition
On a chilly, drizzly day, ten secondary schools from across Sutton gathered to compete in the annual Sutton Borough Cross Country Championships. The event featured a challenging 2-mile course for year 7 and a 3 mile course for year 9 through to 13.
Our Year 7 runners put in an impressive effort, securing a strong 3rd place out of the 10 competing schools and 60 competitors. Battling through the damp conditions, their determination and perseverance truly stood out. Results: Louis Lakin 4th, David Arteaga 17th, Jack Wells 22nd, Chase Charles 25th , Emet Sytypulijak 26th, Murray Potts 43rd.
Year 8 and Year 9 faced tough competition and challenging weather, finishing 10th out of 10 schools with 75 competitors. Despite the results, their grit and perseverance in the drizzle were commendable, providing valuable experience for future races. Results: Eddie Ayres 6th, Joe Crabb 57th, Marley Tharmakulasingam 60th, Connor Badenhorst 61st, and Preston Sawyer 63rd.
Year 10 and 11 delivered an outstanding performance, finishing a close 2nd out of 10 schools. Their commitment and endurance helped secure vital points for the overall team standings. This group of boys put in some serious miles each week with Austin Hudson parents reliably informing me he is currently clocking up 85km per week. Austin Hudson 2nd, Caleb Rushton 9th, Alex Vento 10th, and Ethan Rushton 13th.
A special mention also to Daniel McGowan in year 12 who competed in the under 19's race finishing 14th with the eventual winner showing the standard of the event as a GB junior and completing the 3 mile course in under 15 minutes.
When all the results were tallied, CBSC achieved a solid 4th place overall finishing behind Wilsons, Wallington Boys and John Fisher but comfortably ahead of all remaining schools in the Borough.
A highlight of the championships was the recognition of our talented runners, with 7 out of the 17 competitors selected to represent Surrey Schools and the London Youth Games in upcoming cross country events. This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the skill and hard work of our athletes.
